Take a Stitch Tuesday Well at least I have my days right this week! This week the challenge stitch is knotted cretan.
I know some may read this and think "It's just more Cretan stitch!" In one way it is, but this is an interesting stitch as there is a second pattern of texture built up in the knots formed along the spines.
As a variety of Cretan these knots formed on the spine can create a whole different feel to a piece because of the texture. Ordinary Cretan is flat this version is textured. Worked in a thicker thread you can really do things with it.
Like ordinary Cretan you can work it in rows or use it to fill and create shapes.
Wide rows are useful to create broad lines.
Rows can be worked easily on a curve or placed side by side to create patterns
One side of the prongs can be worked longer than the other.
As you can see in the sample above you can easily work threads in a circle
This stitch really comes into its own when used for organic forms as the twiggy looking line is ideal as grasses or in floral motifs.
Click through to the directions on how to do knotted cretan in my stitch dictionary. When you have stitched a sample swing by and leave a comment so people can check out your site. Don’t forget to leave your URL. To avoid spam you must be registered to leave a comment and all comments are moderated. This means when I have read them I approve them and they are published.
Don’t forget that Debra Spincic generously runs a web ring for the TAST challenge which is found here and for those who have a Flickr account there is the Take a stitch Tuesday flickr group
That’s the Take a Stitch Tuesday Challenge stitch this week … Enjoy!

Hi Sharon,
I have posted my first knotted cretan sample. I found it a bit difficult to get the hang of this stitch but I think I figured it out now.

Hi everyone, knotted cretan another stitch which I have never done before... I really like the extra texture that the knot gives and I have done a couple of seams with it.

Another challenge for me Sharon but I stuck with it. Once I got the hang of it, it was easy. A lovely stitch when done properly.

Thanks, Sharon, for this challenge. I'm learning not only about the particular stitch each week but also about my own strengths and weaknesses in stitching. And I gain so much delight and encouragement from seeing all the work other stitchers involved are doing.

Just a simple seam treatment using the knotted cretan...
I've used the knotted cretan stitch to prepare a background for more embroidery.

Knotted Cretan was a new stitch for me and I really need more practice with it but you can find my feeble attempts here:
