Take a stitch Tuesday Challenge week 16

No doubt people are swinging by this morning the check out what the stitch is for this week.

Without further fuss, this week the challenge stitch is Palistrina stitch. Some found last weeks stitch a challenge I hope this one won't be too much.

This stitch is a textured stitch which holds a curve well. This sample is worked in perle 5 cotton.

It is a stitch that looks quite complex but once you are in the swing of it is enjoyable and relaxing.

I really like it because it forms a ridge of knots. It can be worked with the first bar quite small so that on the finished stitch you do not see the arms.

In the samples I have left the arms wide so that you can see what is happening.

If you widen the stitch it becomes very interesting. For instance you can change the length of the arms, swing them from side to side and generally have fun with them.

For new hands this stitch works best in a thread with firm twist although most thread types are suitable and you can be quite creative with this stitch. This sample (above) worked in perle 8 thread on aida cloth.

If you work the stitch on a curve and change the size of the arms it becomes very twiggy and organic which makes it ideal in floral sprays etc

If you work this stitch row upon row and extend the arms of the stitch you can overlap the arms with the previous row producing an interesting texture. This sample is worked in wool on a foundation cloth of linen which has been hand painted.

Here I have used the stitch as a seam embellishment on a crazy quilt block.

When you have stitched a sample swing by and leave a comment (preferably on this post) so people can check out your site. Don’t forget to leave your URL. To avoid spam you must be registered to leave a comment and all comments are moderated. This means when I have read them I approve them and they are published.

Don’t forget that Debra Spincic generously runs a web ring for the TAST challenge which is found here and for those who have a Flickr account there is the Take a stitch Tuesday flickr group

That’s the Take a Stitch Tuesday Challenge stitch this week …as usual experiment, explore and Enjoy!

Hi Sharon, I have a problem with printing out the full description of the stitch so that I can sit and follow it, some only print out part of the page, a lot of these stitches are new to me, is there a way around thisI have been ill and away so am slowly working my way through the last couple but enjoying it immenseley. thanks Penny

Hi penny - Your printing problems will be something in your settings - I have not done anything that means people can only print one page
Check that you have checked print all pages - or what ever the options your printer gives you - it should then do as it is told!

Wow, Sharon!! We must think alike! I posted a Palestrina stitch video tutorial earlier this morning, only about half a day before this week's TAST!

In the video, I just covered the basic method of the stitch - the video is a little cloudy from the lower resolution in conversion, but I think the method is still clear, if anyone wants to use it while working on the TAST challenge for this week. Once you get how the stitch is formed, it's easy to take it further with extended arms or "barbs."

It's here if anyone wants to check it out:

Hi Sharon - I have finally loaded my Bonnet and Oyster stitch samples. You have certainly been setting challenges but it is very good to discover new stitches and work through them. Incidentally, I can only ever print one page too and I have tried everything.
Cheers
Dale

I have no idea what is causing the print one page problem so I did a bit of search using the terms "print one page" problem
This might help a little but it depends on what printer you are using – if you do a search with your printers name in the search it might help

Hi Sharon, I'm not having a "print one page" problem, but I find I have to select "landscape" in my printer options to print out the full width of the pages. Something to do with the menu down the left side of the page I'm told. Perhaps people could try that and see if it solves their problems too?

Thanks for the info on my print problem, still wont do it but may try the landscape format and see if that works. My bonnet stitch and oyster stitch are on my blog

I am not sure if I got the oyster stitch done correcty but it looks more or less like the description. Find them a challenge but fun to do.

Hi Its me again. I have finished my palestrina stitch and made a bit of a mess of bits of it but loved the one I did with over lapping wool. A good stitch to know.
Landscape didnt work for me but I am getting quite good at sketching out the bits that dont print. this stitch was in a book I had so no problems with following it.
