Challenges,
Hand Embroidery,
Needlework,
Take a Stitch Tuesday Last week everyone seemed to enjoy the challenge of a simple hand worked stitch.
If you are enjoying this challenge you may be interested in my latest classes which are offered on Joggles.com. Sumptuous surfaces is a 6 week online course which will start July 11th. Details are on the joggles site
OK with that little bit of self promotion done and without further fuss ... This week the challenge are two similar embroidery stitches Woven Wheel and Whipped Wheel.
Don't assume these stitches can not be used in evenweave embroidery.
The sample here is actually Eye stitched whipped and I have included it to point out that that these two stitches (or the idea behind how they are worked) makes them very versatile.
As with most stitches it is not technical limitations that you hit but limitations of imagination only.
You can whip or weave both full wheels and half wheels with success.
This small sample I worked last night in silk thread the weight of DMC 8 thread on Quaker cloth. The beads are stitched in the middle first then outer spokes are whipped or woven.
These little three quarter woven wheels are used as fans on a crazy quilt block.
Whipped wheels are a stitch that are a lot of fun to use in contemporary embroidery, particularly when they are used in conjunction with other hand embroidery stitches.
As usual with this challenge when you have stitched a sample swing by and leave a comment (preferably on this post) so people can check out your site. Don’t forget to leave your URL. To avoid spam you must be registered to leave a comment and all comments are moderated. This means when I have read them I approve them and they are published.
Don’t forget that Debra Spincic generously runs a web ring for the TAST challenge which is found here and for those who have a Flickr account there is the Take a stitch Tuesday flickr group
That’s the Take a Stitch Tuesday Challenge stitch this week …as usual experiment, explore and Enjoy!

Hi Sharon, thanks for getting back to me about mentioning TAST on my podcast. I'm not a very techy person so it's taken a while to get up and running but I can now give you the blog link where people can sign up - It's also findable on itunes. It's called Changelings Knit and Stitch. And the url for it is

I'm still behind in TAST I'm afraid - but I'm loving it none-the less.
thank you
I'm new to this group and have a lot of catching up to do, however will start with this week and work my way back.

Hi, I used lace that had threads forming the spokes for my woven wheels http://loopylace.com/anniescrazyworld/?p=442 and have now done a seam using the whipped wheels http://loopylace.com/anniescrazyworld/?p=445

I had trouble with this. The whip threads don't sit properly and don't appear very secure, they tend to bunch up on each other. Can someone advise me what I have done wrong? Thanks
