Creativity tips

Serena of Layers of meaning recently pointed to an old post on Gapingvoid on How to be creative . These are my favourite 10 tips what are yours?

Put the hours in.
You are responsible for your own experience.
Everybody has their own private Mount Everest they were put on this earth to climb.
Don't try to stand out from the crowd; avoid crowds altogether.
If you accept the pain, it cannot hurt you.
Never compare your inside with somebody else's outside.
Merit can be bought. Passion can't.
The choice of media is irrelevant.
Worrying about "Commercial vs. Artistic" is a complete waste of time.
The best way to get approval is not to need it.

If you are a blogger – blog your favourites and swing back here to leave a link or simply leave your favourites as a comment I would love to hear what people think

30. The hardest part of being creative is getting used to it.If you have the creative urge, it isn't going to go away. But sometimes it takes a while before you accept the fact.

I learned this from the outside in. My husband is a photographer. Before we got married he wrote poetry. He will always be creative. It took me a long time to accept that he would never have a Career; that he would never have an Important Job. I don't like some of his photography, but he does. Trying to change him is futile. I appreciate the things he does that I like (and there is a lot) and just wait while he's exploring some area that I don't appreciate.

I am not as creative as my husband, but I will always create (conventions, articles, culinary experiments, interior designs, and needlework). Now I let myself do it and don't worry about whether anyone likes it or not or whether is is any good or not. Some is good, some is not. Just create.

22. Nobody cares. Do it for yourself.

If you don't like the process you will never like the result. If you enjoy the process, even if the result is not where you want it to be you have learned something.

24. Don't worry about finding inspiration. It comes eventually.

Doing cross stitch patterns is not as "creative" as free form embroidery. But I make small changes and over time, I will be more creative (my own designs? moving to other forms of embroidery? moving to another thread based forms?) I don't know, but inspiration will come.

Sharon, I think I misunderstood your post, and have taken a different tack on "creativity" and blogged my thoughts.
Christine.
