For the Love of Stitching Band Sampler
As I mentioned yesterday this next section is dated 1996 - Jan 1998

Stitches:
The first band is raised chain stitch. Being the first band, raised and on the edge of the sampler it is a bit worse for wear. As I explained yesterday this sampler was used to demonstrate stitches for The Young Stitchers group at the local branch of the Embroiderers Guild which I co-ordinated at the time. It got a lot of handling by small but enthusiastic hands.
Thread:
DMC perle thread 3, 5 and a hand dyed cotton, which is the same weight and thickness as DMC perle 5. The foundation thread was worked in DMC perle thread 3 and the bars and the chain stitch was worked in the finer thread.
Fabric:
This section of the sampler is worked on tea towel linen which is not quite an even weave.
Dyes:
Procion cold water dyes for the cotton thread
Size:
All samples are 15 cm (6 inches) wide and stitched together in one long band sampler.
The back story
If this is your first visit, I am in the process of documenting a band sampler, band by band, which is actually a series of samplers worked over a number years and now measures over 35 feet long. All bands are hand embroidered as hand stitching is a fascinating skill to develop. For the history of the piece read my introductory post
On Another Note
If you are thinking of working a sampler I have answered a few questions about width and fabric choice. You may like to take Develop a Personal Library of Stitches as it would be very applicable and will start on March 4, 2009. If you have not taken a class online before this is How classes work
Anyone working a band sampler or stitching along please leave a comment with a link to your blog so people can visit you and see. Even if you just take a stitch or two I would love to see it and I am sure others will too.
Encrusted Crazy Quilting is another online class for crazy quilters which will start on Feb 25th.
Remember if you looking for a stitch guide to hand embroidery stitches, instructions can be found in my stitch dictionary

Wow, you have gone through a lot of stitches in the week I have been on holiday, without internet access! Very inspiring. Actually a lot of the stitches coming up look like ones we looked at in PLOS, which by the way was also very inspiring and also instructive.
I managed a little stitching while away, I will try to post on my blog tomorrow.
