CQ Detail 50

This morning I will talk about two details. The first is the floral motif pictured above and the second is  the lace that runs beside the seam.

Stitches:

The floral motif is made up of  bullion knot roses, fly stitch leaves and French knots.

The lace and seam are both embellished with  detached chain stitch and straight stitch.

Thread:

The bullion roses and French knots are both worked in a hand dyed cotton the same weight and thickness as perle thread #8.

The leaves are worked in both wool and cotton. A strand of each was threaded in the needle and worked at the same time as you would work two strands of floss. They were hand dyed together and the different fiber dyed different tones of the same colour.

The thread used to embroider the lace was also hand dyed cotton.

Placement and Foundation Fabric:

This seam is between piece 6  and piece 2. You will find the diagram in the article I wrote when I introduced block 7 In the same article I also talked about the foundation fabrics I used.

Type of lace

I think the lace is cotton rayon mix because of the way it took the dyes.

Dyes:

Procion cold water dyes for the cotton, wool and lace

The back story

This crazy quilt block is part of my “I dropped the Button box” quilt. I am documenting this crazy quilt detail by detail, every second day. You will find information about this series of articles and the quilt here  and all articles in the series are categorised under Crazy Quilt  details

I love the lavender or purple roses. Don't you just love using the bullion stitch? It is so much fun to see how far you can take it. I am thinking about using a long button needle, like they use in applying buttons to pillows and I can get a really long cord. I am going to try to use this to make dread locks on a doll that I made. Will let you know how it turns out.

Jan - using bullion for dreadlocks sounds great. I would love to hear about it when done
