TAST 2010 Week 5 Knotted buttonhole stitch
People seem to be enjoying the TAST 2010 challenge. I know I very much enjoy making a quiet cuppa and sitting down to browse the blogs and check out what the members on stitchin fingers group and the flickr TAST site have done.
I wont chatter on too much, except to say thanks to everyone for sharing, as without people sharing it would not be half as enjoyable.
I know some people have not done TAST 1 which covered all the basic stitches and some. Coming up in the near future is a stitch that involves a combination of bullion stitches. I am going to give people the heads up on this as some people might want to polish up their bullion technique. That said I think it will be a stitch that people love. No more of that for the moment as it is time to announce this week's stitch!
This week we have a stitch called Knotted Buttonhole stitch which I found in Marion Nichols in her book Encyclopedia of Embroidery Stitches.
Once you get into a rhythm this stitch is simple and quick to work and produces some great twiggy like stitches that look great as foliage in flower sprays.
Also since this stitch is a member of the buttonhole family you can create great variety by changing the upright lengths.
Anyone who watched as I blogged section 12 of the love of stitching band sampler will know that buttonhole offers oodles and oodles of choices. Many of the variations on section 12 of that sampler can easily be adapted to Knotted Buttonhole.
Rows of the stitch can be built up to create patterns or in a freestyle manner for texture. Knotted buttonhole can be worked back to back, feathered or further decorated with beads.
How to work Knotted buttonhole stitch
This stitch is worked from left to right over two imaginary lines.
Bring the thread out on the lower line, insert the needle in position in the upper line making a straight downward motion and then loop the thread under the needle point as you would buttonhole stitch.

Pull the needle through the fabric to form a loop and repeat this process. In other words make two buttonhole stitches with the second buttonhole stitch fairly close to the first

Next pass the needle under the stitches you just made, but not through the fabric.
Make sure the thread passes under the needle as illustrated.

Pull the needle through to make a loop. Pull until snug but not too tight.

Continue in this manner along the line.

It is an interesting stitch that you can work in a variety of traditional ways or can be layered to create heavy texture. This sample is worked in a variety of threads such as silk, cotton, wool, chenille and ribbon.
How to join in.
Work an example of the stitch. Experiment a bit, photograph it, and put it on your flickr site or write about it on your blog. Please remember to link back to here so others can find the challenge too

Great stitch, thanks Sharon (think my poor tired brain has problems with some of the others)
