TAST 2010 Week 2 Knotted Loop stitch

I hope everyone enjoyed the first week of TAST 2010 as we are already at the second. Without any fuss I would like to introduce you to a stitch I dicovered in A-Z of Embroidery Stitches: v. 2 It is called knotted loop stitch.

How to stitch Knotted Loop stitch

Traditionally this stitch is worked from right to left between two parallel lines.

Bring the needle to the front of the fabric and make a straight stitch upwards , as illustrated.
Take the thread through the fabric and bring it out slightly to the left on the bottom line as illustrated.
Slide the needle under the first stitch passing it from right to left.

Keep the working thread under the needle
Pull the thread through to create the first loop.
Take the needle back into the fabric next to where you made the first half of the stitch.
Take the thread up to the top line making a little diagonal stitch and insert the needle.
Bring the needle out on the bottom line a little further on to the left.
Slide the needle under the diagonal stitch and pull it through to make another loop. Continue along the line in this manner.

Since it is described as being ideal for borders it means it is also ideal for crazy quilting. The arms could be spaced differently and the arms could be extended or contracted quite easily.
Even though it is is normally worked between to parallel rows it can be stacked or worked free form.
Or floral motifs could be worked easily.

What to do now:

Work an example of the stitch . Experiment a bit and see what you come up with. Photograph it, and put it on your flickr site or write about it on your blog (remember my request to link back to here so others can find the challenge too)

Come here to this post and leave a comment to tell everyone where you have your photograph and don’t forget to leave your blog address. (You can click on the title and  it will take you to this post on an individual page if you bookmark it you can find it again)

Visit a few sites of people who have already left a comment. See what they have done. I am sure everyone will enjoy  following the links left in the comments. If you have time let other people know that you have seen their work

Other groups and networks

You can also share your explorations with other members on  stitchin fingers group and the flickr TAST site

All posts relating to this challenge are in the Take a Stitch Tuesday category and the guidelines and list of participants is here.

I like having Tuesday arrive on Monday evening. The only time I feel like I'm ahead of the avalanche of life. So I haven't signed up because I usually don't make it all the way to the end of study, but I've started at the very beginning. A very good place to start. Unfortunately, Julie never told us how to finish. But she did know all about a needle pulling thread. Humming now while I try this one. Thanks for all you do, Sharon.

I managed to get away from school a little early today, so I came straight home and did my row of this weeks stitch.
Now I will start marking the assignments that came in this morning. Happy stitching everyone!

Thanks for all the time and effort you put in to this. I Have something to look forward to each week now.

Still cant work out how to link this to my blog.

Thank you, Sharon, for this wonderful opportunity to stitch some new stitches every week. I can find them already on Monday night as I am living in Europe. I put my first results on my flickr photo stream. anaslua2010. What I do not know is: how can I automatically put in the name of the Flickr address at this place.
Awaiting already next Monday night!

I decided to try expanding my efforts with the knotted loop stitch and they are on my blog at shirleystwistedthreads.blogspot.com

March 11, 2010 | Unregistered Commentershirley bligh

I don't know what to do after I've made the first stitch. Where does the needle go back into the fabric? I need one more line of instruction to tell me HOW to continue in this manner to create a line. Help, anyone?

March 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJoWynn Johns

Hi JoWynn
Under the 4th photo I added the line "Take the needle back into the fabric next to where you made the first half of the stitch" ie the little stitch you make in the first photo.
Then you work along the line

Thanks for letting me know that the instructions were not clear - let me know how you go

March 12, 2010 | Registered CommenterSharon B

My week 2 has been posted. I like this easy stitch. I'll be playing more with this one.

I'm a little lost at the end as well.
You take the needle back into the fabric next to where you made the first half of the stitch ... that is from the top to the back? Then you bring it out to the left of the knot? Do you then do a float stitch, go in and out to start again?
one more close up photo of a few stitches would help.

March 12, 2010 | Unregistered Commentervivian

Hi Sharon.............
Thanks for introducing us to this stitch.
I have posted my trials and experiments with the stitch.

and am waiting for next Tuesday....

best regards.

Sonie.

I put my knotted loop stitches on my photostream.
I am not quite satisfied with the result but I think it looks funny.

March 13, 2010 | Unregistered Commenteranaslua2010

Excuse me to write again but I finally managed to show my address of my photostream on flickr:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/stitchinwoman/

March 13, 2010 | Unregistered Commenteranaslua2010

Vivian
you ask
"You take the needle back into the fabric next to where you made the first half of the stitch ... "
yes
"that is from the top to the back?"
yes
" Then you bring it out to the left of the knot?"
No the left on the bottom line - see photo 2

"Do you then do a float stitch,"
You are working between two invisable parallel lines You create the loop at the middle of the line- the take the thread to the top
see photos 3 and 4
I hope this helps

I posted my Knotted Loop stitch: http://vivian-institches.blogspot.com/2010/03/tast-ii-1-diamond-stitch-2-knotted-loop.html
This one gave me problems ... I'm not sure if I did it correctly ... oh, well !

March 13, 2010 | Unregistered Commentervivian

I have posted this weeks stitch to my blog, http://wwww.carorose.typepad.com. I didn't really like this stitch although I can see lots of uses for it.

March 13, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCarolyn Foley

Hi Sharon,

An other new stitch for me. I was acquainted with loop stitch, but not with a knot in it!
My sample is on my blog and in the flickr group, early for a change.

March 14, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterkay susan

I posted my effort on the flickr tast page, not the neatest sample one can see. I think I am out of practice at fancy stitches & in particular - reading instructions properly.

March 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLinda Calverley

I did a small trial of this stitch. It is posted on my flickr site. http://www.flickr.com/photos/vallor/

I like the possibilities with this stitch.

Thanks, Sharon.

I think I must be too tired to work this out....will try in the morning once my brain wakes up. I'm sure I'm trying to make it too complicated!

March 14, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterguzzisue

This is such a neat stitch. I love your examples! I have posted my results. I hope I did them correctly. The thread goes under the needle only when the the needle is taken under the upper straight stitch????
Blogged at http://mindblogglings.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html#1527375398234461285 and also in the Flickr group site

March 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNancilyn

Sharon I am having trouble with this stitch, I can do normal loop stitch but this seems to have an extra leg at the top and you seem to go under twice, is this correct?

March 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterPenny

I nearly forgot to do it but I have just finished a small sample.
I want to start a sampler but I need to talk to you about it-when time permits.
I like this stitch-one of those relaxing ones I think.

Here is my sample. I got carried away again...

Now that I look at some more samples I wish I had tried putting the "arms" closer together to make a denser stitch. I'll try that next time!

March 15, 2010 | Unregistered Commentergisele

Glad Doreen liked it, I had terrible trouble and did some with two knots and some with one and am not at all sure if it is right or not, but I have managed to get it done befor the deadline.
Keep on with the stitches Sharon!

I've finished my week 2 sample. I really enjoyed doing this stitch - lots of variations that can be done. Go to http://barbs-spiritsong.blogspot.com to have a look.

Hello Sharon, I found knotted loop stitch took a little trial to click, but once in the rhythm ,found it to be a great stitch. Hope I have worked it correctly. If not, it was still enjoyable.
Thank you, Susan.

I love looking at what everyone has done with each new stitch. Thank you for posting them to the flickr group, so I can see them all together. I sometimes go to the blogs, too, but If I spend too much time looking, I don't have time to do my own. For the first two stitches I have printed and made a collage in my journal of many of the examples, so I can see everyone's ideas, not just my own.

March 16, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCindy B

I got mine done and will add it to the flicker.

March 16, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTania Worth

A not very good sample on my blog this morning - just in time as I see we have the next one already!

March 16, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSue McB

Here we go, http://www.flickr.com/photos/37200176@N07/
I"m still finishing both weeks but at least got this one up by the end of week 2. I'm still working up the courage to go in a regular circle with this stitch. It's fun to slip bugle beads onto the longer side of the stitch and I loved making zig zags.

March 16, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLiz Ozselcuk

I have posted my week two efforts. I am still continuing to TAST 1 along with it. I think I got a little over energetic about the embroidery this week, but boy does it have some good ideas going in my head.

I'm a little late with this, but I did some knotted loop stitch today:

Kingdom of the Blind

It's a simple and effective stitch but after my experience with DMC's Fluorescent Effects thread I recommend others to stick to cotton, silk or wool fibres!

Thanks for the challenge, Sharon.
