TAST 2010 week 10 Cloud Filling

Last week I asked if people needed a catch up week. I said I would take votes in the comments and the folks who are keeping up won out.

Once again I ask to Please remember to link back to here so others can find the challenge too.

So, here we are with Week 10 a stitch called cloud filling. At first glance it looks like a ho-hum filler but it is amazingly useful.

I have used it on things like Christmas decorations, crazy quilting to block in areas, cushions and bags in a simple band with a few beads, and even as a band for a border stitch!

Of course I have used it for what it is supposed to be used for which is a filling stitch too. (Rash I know ... but ...)

This stitch is quick and easy to work and simple as I have taught it to children.

If you change the threads can be very interesting.

The grid that you lay down first is traditionally a simple straight stitch but if you want to take it into the realm of the contemporary you can use other stitches.

For instance in the sample to the right I used detached chain stitch. Other stitches you can use are bullions, block of straight stitches or even things like beads. Anything that will act as tie for the lacing will work.

The other thing you can do is add beads in the spaces between the laced thread, as in the sample below.

Other variations would include changing the spacing of the original grid and shifting the size of the ties on the original grid

How to work Cloud Filling

Work lines of small vertical straight stitches in a grid like manner with every alternate row off set as in the illustration. Do not work these stitches too tight as you will be threading another thread under these stitches.

Thread your second thread in a blunt needle. You can use the same thread, or a thread of a different colour or thickness.

Bring your needle up on the top row as illustrated. Pass the needle under the first stitch and pull it through then pass the needle under the first stitch on the row below and pull it through.

Note you are not taking the needle through the fabric but threading the thread under the foundation stitches.

Continue in this up and down manner until the row is laced.

The second row of lacing is the mirror image of the first.

Continue this lacing row upon row until the area is done.

How to join in.

Work an example of the stitch. Experiment a bit, photograph it, and put it on your flickr site or write about it on your blog.

Please remember to link back to here so others can find the challenge too

I think you've chosen a perfect stitch for both those who wish to carry on and a simple enough stitch for those catching up. (I didn't even see the question as these last two weeks have been so busy and flown by in a slow motion blur). I would think that lacing should be a rather easy stitch to do for a catch up week. Famous last words for me though, usually those things that seem simplest end up needing more effort than I thought. Still I am thinking that this stitch looks pretty straight forward.
So I am Saying Thanks!!! I have started the sample of the last stitch but have not finished soit's not posted yet on the Flickr group. I am hoping that this stitch will allow me to catch up!

Hi Sharon
I have done my sample sampler--I used a cream thread on the cream linen for the straight stitches to give the appearance that the laced stitches were floating.
Now for the real deal.
