TAST 2010 Week 14 Buttonhole Herringbone

Once again I hope everyone enjoyed last weeks stitch. This week I finally managed to put a list of what stitches have been in the challenge so that if people are starting to play catch up this is an easy reference. You will find the list part way down the guidelines page

I have also included a list at the bottom of this post.

This week we have another composite stitch which I often get asked about. It is called buttonholed herringbone. As the name suggests it  consists of a foundation of herringbone stitch which is then buttonholed.

First work a line of herringbone in fairly solid thread such as perle 5. If you need a refresher on how to work herringbone you will find it listed in my stitch dictionary. You will also find buttonhole listed as well

Use a blunt ended needle for the second thread so that you do not split the foundation herringbone stitches.

Bring your needle out at the base of the row of herringbone then work buttonhole stitch using the herringbone stitches as the foundation.

Note you are not passing your needle through the fabric.

Work buttonhole stitches along the bar until they are snug.

When you reach the top of the bar pass the needle under the cross of the herringbone stitch and work a single buttonhole stitch.

Then continue on the downward bar once again working enough buttonhole stitches until they are snug.

When you reach the bottom of the bar pass the needle under the cross of the herringbone stitch and work a single buttonhole stitch.

Continue in this manner until the foundation stitches of herringbone are covered in buttonhole.

How to join in.

Work an example of the stitch. Experiment a bit, photograph it, and put it on your flickr site or write about it on your blog.

Please remember to link back to here so others can find the challenge too.

Come here to this post and leave a comment to tell everyone where your site is. (Click on the title and it will take you to this post on an individual page if you bookmark it you can find it again)

Also now if you leave your full address ie include the http:// bit in your address it will become a link automatically.

Visit a few sites of people who have already left a comment. See what they have done. I am sure everyone will enjoy following the links left in the comments. If you have time, let other people know that you have seen their work on their site.

Lucky me, I already know this stitch! I tried it the first time in August last year:

And I used it on a crazy ornament last month:

It is such a pretty stitch!

I love this stitch. I'm always looking for a way to stitch a pretty scallop along a seam. This is perfect for that. My sampler is found on the flickr site.

I've posted the Buttonhole Herringbone stitch on my blog http://focus-on-fiber.blogspot.com It would really make a nice band and could be combined in a number of ways.

I've done my one too......the best result was in a circle, which resulted in a star of sorts. Examples on the blog and Flickr

I have put up my effort for week 14 on my blog at

I can see a whole lot of potential for this stitch and will make a lot of use of it in the future.

TAST 1 Re-run - Feather Stitch. My first TAST sample stitches are done. The photo's bad and my sample is very simple, but I'm thrilled to have finished several variations of the stitch. This exercise will help tremendously with the Crazy Quilt block I'm making for your class.

Hope I did this right!
