TAST 2010 Week 16 Italian knotted border stitch

I notice more and more people are having to play catch up so a catch up week might be order next week. Leave a comment if you need a a catch up week or not. Like last time, it's democratic I simply count up the comments at the end of the week. If more people say they are happy and up to date than those that want a week off then that is what happens. So let me know.

This week we have a stitch that is great for borders and edges but also can be worked in a circle to create flowers It is called Italian knotted border stitch.

On this sample I have spaced individual stitches a little wider than usual so that people can see how the stitch is made up.

How to work Italian Knotted Border Stitch

Italian knotted border stitch is actually a variety of Fly stitch and you begin the stitch in the same way.

Bring the thread through the fabric out at the top and to the left of the line that is to be worked.

Insert the needle a small space along the line, level and to the right of where the thread first came out.

With the thread wrapped under the needle, pull it through the fabric.

Secure the stitch in position with a small knot.

To do this you need to wrap your working thread once around the needle and insert the needle at the base to tie down the stitch.

As you pull the needle to the back keep the tension of working thread even by guiding the thread under your left thumb like you would a French knot.

Continue along the row in this manner

Apart from being a lovely border this stitch makes great floral motifs if worked in a ring. You can also use it to hold down a thicker thread or ribbon or weave a thin ribbon through the spokes.

I have also seen another variety of Italian knotted border stitch documented in Marion Nichols Encyclopedia of Embroidery Stitches, which has a second row of French knots worked along the top of the open sitches.

I hope you enjoy this weeks stitch!

How to join in.

Work an example of the stitch. Experiment a bit, photograph it, and put it on your flickr site or write about it on your blog.

I got behind because of sickness. I can catch up without a catch up week. It doesn't matter to me if we have one or not.

Hi Sharon, my Week 15 has been completed for days but I am finding it impossible to get the photos transferred. May be some time before I can sort the problem. Sorry.

I am happy with staying with the weekly stitches.

Sharon, this is OT (with respect to TAST) but have you seen that Piecework magazine's July/August issue will be focusing on samplers and sample books? Thought you might be interested.

I don't need a catch-up week. Also, I just wanted to say how impressed I am with the samplers and designs that have been showing up in the Flickr group.I think all of us looking at each others work is really stretching us. At least I think this is happening for me, although some weeks I really fall short of my goals.

Although I was a little late with last week's stitch I would not need a catch up week. Here is my example for this week: http://textileexplorations.blogspot.com/2010/06/tast2-ladder-and-italian-knotted-border.html

I don't need a catch up week, but if lots of people wanted one then I don't mind either way.
