TAST 2010 Week 21 Slipped Detached Chain
I hope everyone enjoyed last weeks stitch. This week we are going to work a stitch that is pretty, particularly if you work it in patterns and it is not so textured.
Slipped detached chain is often called tulip stitch and is one of those easy quick stitches that lends itself to variation.
It is so simple people overlook Slipped detached chain as a stitch to experiment with. It is a case of "Oh yes, simple but you cant do much with it" ... but you can
Slipped detached chain is is extremely simple and quickly worked so people should have time to experiment a bit with it.
You can work the chain part of the stitch in one thread and change threads for the slipped straight stitches.
You can change the height of the detached chain and vary the angle of the slipped straight stitches. These are just a few ideas.
It is effective in perle threads, wool, ribbon and fine metalic cords.
First you make a single detached chain stitch.
Bring your needle from the back to one side of the detached chain and slide your needle under the tie of the detached chain taking it through to insert on the other side of the detached chain.

You can have one two or more of these base stitches at varying angles.

You can arrange the stitch in various patterns and being quick it is ideal to sprinkle as an isolated stitch over a large area. Also you can work them in rings.

I have often substituted the detached chain with oyster stitch to add extra texture.

Also I have used this stitch on crazy quilted items.

Adding a bead or metalic thread adds even more zest.

I hope you enjoy this weeks stitch!

This could be a very useful stitch. I can't imagine why I've never tried it before.
