TAST 2010 Week 24 Siennese Stitch

I discovered Siennese Stitch in A-Z of Embroidery Stitches, volume 2 (p128) and think it might be a variety of loop stitch.

Worked alone, if you turn your work, this stitch looks a bit like the letter K but worked closely between two lines it can be a good border. When worked row upon row it can produce a filling stitch.

Spacing and thread weight changes the look of this stitch a lot making it more versatile than it first looks. It is also an interesting stitch to couch ribbon and chunky novelty threads with or you can add a bead at the loop stage which makes it very decorative.

How to work Siennese Stitch

Work this stitch from top to bottom between two lines.

First make a horizontal straight stitch and have the needle emerge from the fabric just below on the left hand side.

Slide the needle from top to bottom under the straight stitch make sure the working thread is under the needle and pull the needle through in order to form a loop.

Take your thread to the back of the fabric on the right hand side of the line.

This completes the first segment of the stitch.

Continue in this manner down the line.

As you can see I worked this sample in a hand dyed perle #5 thread (hence the green thread in the first few images) Enjoy this weeks stitch!

How to join in.

Work an example of the stitch. Experiment a bit, photograph it, and put it on your flickr site or write about it on your blog.

I just had a look at what other people did with Siennese Stitch. Unfortunately, I could not comment on Shirley's and Annet's blogs. There seems to be a problem with those blogger blogs where the design was changed. The gadgets that should appear on the left are directly over the blog posts so that I can't read the posts and can't clock the comment button. I am sorry, this might not be the right place for stating my problem but can anybody help or do I have to wait until blogger fixes this problem?
Thanks so much.

Mine is on my blog, easy to do, but not sure at this stage what I would use it for.

Raphaela I have just checked the blogs you mention and they display fine - you could try another web browser. If you are using Internet Explorer try Firefox - or Chrome and see what it looks like. Just a thought
