TAST 2010 Week 26 Chained Cross Stitch

This  weeks stitch is one of those useful varieties that can add a shift in texture that will create interest.

But before we launch into how to work the stitch I would like to suggest that if you are enjoying this challenge you may also enjoy Personal Library of Stitches an online class which will start on Friday September 24th. for more information about this class follow the link as at a cost of 6 lessons for $60 it is good value. I do not re-hash what is all ready on my blog. In this course people are taught technique within the context of learning to design  it is not a course that simply teaches the stitches alone.

But on to this weeks stitch!

This variation of cross stitch can be worked as you would cross stitch to produce a thick filling stitch or you can work it in a scattered and free form manner to produce an interesting isolated stitch.

How to work chained cross stitch

The key difference with this variation of cross stitch is that each stitch must be worked to completion before moving on to the next.

Bring the working thread to the front of the fabric and work a diagonal stitch as you would with basic cross stitch. I have worked from bottom left to top right

Now work a chain stitch diagonally across the first stitch to form a cross

To do this bring the needle up through the fabric at the top left of the stitch as illustrated. Hold the thread with the left thumb. Insert the needle back into where it first came out. Take the needle through the fabric bringing the point of the needle out at the bottom left of the fabric.

With the thread wrapped under the needle point pull the needle through the fabric.

Insert the needle back into the fabric at the top right an make a diagonal stitch

Work another chain stitch and continue in this way along the line or over the area to be covered.

How to join in.

Work an example of the stitch. Experiment a bit, photograph it, and put it on your flickr site or write about it on your blog.

Please remember to link back to here so others can find the challenge too.

I have done my chained cross stitch and it is on my blog, I think it is obvious when I am not madly keen on a stitch as I tend to do them rather badly, couldnt get the tension right on this.

It wasn't the stitch, it was the fabric!
