TAST 2010 Week 23 Waved Chain

I discovered Waved chain in Edith John's Creative stitches (p.44) It is a member of the chain stitch family and another form of triple chain.

Waved chain can be easily worked in a circle or you can emphasise the wave effect by angling the needle further left or right, you can thread ribbon through it and add beads. It is a fun and interesting linear stitch but if you layer it you build up some very interesting textures with it too!

Begin with a small chain stitch. To make this bring the working thread up through the fabric and take the needle through the fabric to make a small stitch and wrap the thread under the needle as illustrated.

With the thread wrapped under the needle point pull the needle through the fabric to make your first small chain stitch.

Bring the needle up through the fabric close but not at the same point where the working thread first emerged.

Take the needle through the fabric to make a stitch, bringing the point of the needle out a small space under and to the right of the line of the stitch as illustrated in the picture.

Wrap the thread under the needle point and  pull the needle through the fabric.

Once again bring the needle up through the fabric close but not at the same point the the right hand side of the second chain.

Take the needle through the fabric bringing the point of the needle out a short space under and to the right of the line of the stitch.

With the thread wrapped under the needle point pull the needle through the fabric. This forms the first triple chain stitch.

To start of the second wave, make a chain stitch emerging from the last loop

Bring the needle up through the fabric close to where the working thread first emerged from inside the loop of the last chain. Take the needle through the fabric bringing the point of the needle out a short space under and to the left of the line of the stitch as illustrated in the picture.

With the thread wrapped under the needle point pull the needle through the fabric.

Bring the needle up through the fabric close to where the working thread first emerged from inside the loop of the last chain. Take the needle through the fabric bringing the point of the needle out a short space under and to the left of the line of the stitch as illustrated in the picture.

With the thread wrapped under the needle point pull the needle through the fabric to form the second wave of the line.

Work this way first to the right then to the left along the line.

Enjoy this weeks stitch!
