TAST 2010 Week 27 Woven Trellis Stitch

This weeks challenge stitch is a great stitch that can add texture to a piece. You can make them individually and and with a bead in the middle they look like flowers. Or you can make them quite large scattered across a piece or can  look very effective if worked on mass or overlapping each other.

If you are enjoying this challenge you may also enjoy Personal Library of Stitches an online class which will start on Friday September 24th. For more information about this class follow the link, as at a cost of 6 lessons for $60 it is good value.

How to work Woven Trellis stitch

With woven trellis you work a group of foundation stitches which hold weaving. When weaving use a blunt tapestry needle so that as you weave the threads you do not split the threads by accident.

Work the foundation stitches. Start by working 12 straight stitches arranged radiating from the middle of a circle clustered in groups of 3 so that you have a formation that looks like the illustration.

Bring the working thread out at the middle.

Using a a blunt tapestry needle begin weaving by selecting a 'petal' and sliding the needle from one side to the other, picking up the two outer threads. You do not pick up the middle thread.

Pull the thread through firmly but not too tight.

Turn the needle and continue weaving by sliding the needle from one side to the other, picking the middle thread.

Pull your thread through and continue in this back and forth motion until you have woven to the base.

As you weave use the needle to pack the petal so that it firm.

Continue weaving until it is packed firmly to the base. Take the thread to the back and  to the middle o start on the next petal.

When you have worked all 4 sections take the thread to the back of your work and secure with two small back stitches.

As you can see this stitch looks very effective in a hand dyed multicoloured thread.

How to join in.

Work an example of the stitch. Experiment a bit, photograph it, and put it on your flickr site or write about it on your blog.

Oh this is a nice stitch and I'm looking forward to trying it out. It looks similar to the Double Cast-on but even easier to manage.
